The Hokies defeated Miami in their ACC opener 61-60. Senior Jarell Eddie led the Hokies with 24 points and eight rebounds.
Miami led by 13 points in the 2nd half but the Hokies caught up forcing the hurricanes into OT.
Eddie scored Tech’s final 11 points as part of a 13-3 run in the last seven and a half minutes of the second half.
Eddie later hit a jumper in OT to put the Hokies up 61-59.
Miami’s Garrius Adams was then fouled but only made one of his two free throws with seven seconds left.
Miami got the rebound, but a bad shot hit the back of the backboard and the Hokies walked away with the defeat.
Joey van Zegeren had a career-high with 10 rebounds.
Freshman Ben Emelogu was the only other Tech player to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points.
Marshall Wood and Adam Smith each scored 8 for the Hokies. Both teams shot just under 35%. The Hurricanes and the Hokies struggled with turnovers leaving Miami with 10 and Tech with 12.
Tech now improves their overall record to 7-3 and 1-0 in the ACC. The Hokies return to action December 21, 2013 as they travel to Richmond to take on VCU.
