Twenty-Two year old University of Miami walk-on football player Joey Grosso died lobster diving. Grosso had just been selected to the team.
Grosso was scuba diving off of Pompano Beach on the opening day of Florida’s lobster mini season. This two day event that allows divers a chance to catch lobster before commercial fisherman put their traps in the water.
Grosso was found floating unconscious Wednesday morning, and pronounced dead upon arrival at an area hospital, according to a report from the Miami Herald.
“This has been the most tragic 24 hours that anyone in our family has ever experienced,” stated Grosso’s cousin Michael Becker. “He was a diehard UM fan — our whole family is. He didn’t even care about playing; he just wanted to say he was a Miami Hurricane. It meant the world to him.”
